A day after sharing four constituencies with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, the BNP allocated seven more parliamentary seats to its allies and like‑minded parties.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names of the candidates at a press conference at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Wednesday.
Fakhrul said Dr Redwan Ahmed, who joined the BNP from the LDP, will contest from Comilla‑7; Mostafa Jamal Haider, chairman of the Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar) and a senior leader of the 12‑party alliance, from Pirojpur‑1; Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, from Patuakhali‑3; Rashed Khan, general secretary of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, from Jhenaidah‑4; Bobi Hajjaj, who joined the BNP, from Dhaka‑13; Jonayed Saki, coordinator of the Ganosamhati Andolon, from Brahmanbaria‑6; Mufti Rashid of the Islami Oikya Jote, from Jessore‑5; and Fariduzzaman Farhad of the NPP, from Narail‑2.
Warning party activists, Fakhrul said the BNP will not nominate any candidate in constituencies allocated to allies, in line with the central decision. He added that if anyone contests as an independent, organizational action will be taken.
Earlier, on Tuesday, at a press conference in Gulshan, Fakhrul said that under an electoral understanding with Jamiat, candidates will contest the election using their party symbol, Khejur Gachh (Date Palm Tree), while the BNP will not nominate candidates in those constituencies.
The four candidates are Maulana Md Monzurul Islam Afendi in Nilphamari‑1, Mufti Monir Hussain Qasmi in Narayanganj‑4, Maulana Md Ubaidullah Farooq in Sylhet‑5, and Maulana Zunaid Al‑Habib in Brahmanbaria‑2.
Out of 300 constituencies, the BNP has already announced its candidates in 272 seats in two phases. Of the remaining 28 seats, an electoral understanding with Jamiat was reached for four, and seven more seats were allocated to allies. Sixteen seats remain undecided.
