BNP and Awami League activists clashed and fired gunshots over taking control of Hura Sagar riverghat at Brishalikha in Bera municipality of Pabna on Monday.
During the violence, local BNP office was vandalised and set ablaze, witnesses said.
Bera Municipal BNP President Fazlur Rahman Fakir said, “The incident took place between an extortionist group and so-called BNP activists.”
AKM Habibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bera Model Police Station, said, “BNP and Awami League activists were locked in in the clash. They traded gunshots during the clash.”
Some people were injured in the violence as both sides exchanged gunfire during the clash. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately.
Brishalikha ghat on the river is near the ancestral home of former deputy speaker and Awami League leader Shamsul Haque Tuku.
During the regime of the Awami League-led government, AL activists controlled the river ghat.
After the 05 August political changeover, they continued to maintain control with the support from a group of BNP activists.
“The clash erupted when another BNP group, led by party leader Hasan Ali, attempted to take control of the river ghat,” says a spot account of the violence.
Army personnel and policemen were deployed in the area as tensions were prevailing following the incident.
