Member of Parliament from Brahmanbaria-2 Rumeen Farhana has warned that failure to control BNP activists at the grassroots level could lead to “serious consequences.”
She made the remarks after leaving the Shaheed Minar in Sarail upazila without placing floral tributes in the early hours of Ekushey amid rising tensions.
According to local sources, Rumeen Farhana went to the Shaheed Minar shortly after midnight to pay tribute to the Language Movement martyrs.
However, she was reportedly prevented from doing so by supporters of Anwar Master, a former general secretary of the upazila BNP unit, who had positioned themselves at the venue earlier.
The situation quickly escalated into heated exchanges and scuffles between rival groups of party activists. At one stage, slogans were reportedly chanted targeting the MP.
Supporters of Rumeen Farhana claimed that one of her activists was injured during the clash.
Citing security concerns amid rising tensions, the MP left the Shaheed Minar without placing floral tributes.
Speaking to journalists afterward, she alleged that the obstruction was politically motivated and aimed at creating an unpleasant situation.
“If the BNP fails to control its leaders and activists at the grassroots level, the consequences will be dire,” she said.
In protest, her supporters later blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, disrupting traffic and causing long tailbacks on both sides. Law enforcement agencies intervened and brought the situation under control, restoring vehicular movement.
