A BNP activist was injured after unidentified assailants opened fire and hurled bombs at him in Gangni upazila of Meherpur early Monday.
He was rushed to Gangni Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, said Gangni Police Station Officer-in-charge Uttam Kumar Das.
He said bullet cartridges were recovered from the scene and efforts are underway to arrest those involved.
Victim Mukul Hossain, 55, of Saharbati village, came under attack while walking along the road towards Bhatpara village at dawn.
Witnesses said the assailants fired several shots, hitting him in the chest, back and hand, before hurling bombs and fleeing the scene.
Locals rescued Mukul and took him to the local hospital. He was later transferred to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
According to police, Mukul holds no formal post in the BNP but is known to lead a faction in the area. Investigators suspect the attack may be linked to local dominance or previous enmity.
