The decision on who will become Bangladesh’s next president will be taken by the BNP’s top leadership, the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Saturday.
Rizvi made the remarks after paying respects at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in the capital.
He was accompanied by the newly appointed chairmen of 12 state-owned institutions during the visit.
Responding to questions about the selection of the next president, Rizvi said the matter would be determined by the party’s high command.
He also said demands from different political parties seeking the trial of resigned President Mohammed Shahabuddin were related to the BNP’s political position and policy decisions.
Rizvi expressed hope that the newly appointed chairmen of state-owned organisations would carry out their duties with sincerity, integrity, and commitment.
He further said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been assessing the contributions of party leaders and activists at various levels and recognising those who made sacrifices for the party.
During Shahabuddin’s tenure as president, he administered the oath of office to three heads of government – an unprecedented situation in Bangladesh’s political history for a sitting president.
