At least 15 people, including Gangni Upazila Bangladesh Nationalist Party President Alfaz Uddin Kalu, were injured in a clash between two factions of the party over control of the Raipur Union Parishad chairman’s post in Meherpur.
The clash occurred in front of the Raipur Union Parishad building in Gangni upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
Among the injured were Raipur Union Ward 9 Bangladesh Nationalist Party General Secretary Bakul Hossain, party activists Khairul Islam and Russell Hossain.
They were admitted to hospital while others received treatment locally.
Gangni Upazila Health Complex authorities said Alfaz Uddin Kalu and Khairul Islam suffered sharp weapon injuries to the head and required several stitches.
They were later sent to Kushtia Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
Local sources said Raipur Union Parishad Chairman and Awami League leader Golam Saklayen Chepu has not been able to enter the parishad since the July mass uprising.
Since then, BNP leader Sargidul Islam has been performing duties as panel chairman.
However, a faction of the BN Party had been accusing Sargidul Islam of various irregularities.
The group later attempted to install Chepu in the chairman’s position, prompting supporters of Sargidul Islam to gather in front of the parishad building.
At one stage, both groups clashed with sticks and sharp weapons. Members of the police and army later visited the scene. Police said the situation in the area is now under control.
Gangni Police Station Sub-Inspector Uttam Kumar Das said police rushed to the spot after tensions rose between the two groups and brought the situation under control.
