BNP Standing Committee member Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has criticised protest rallies organised by 11-party alliance members, including Jamaat-e-Islami, saying demonstrations before the new government has taken oath are “not a good sign.”
Speaking at a discussion program at RAOWA Club in Mohakhali to mark the 42nd death anniversary of Liberation War commander General (Retd) MAG Osmani, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed urged opposition parties to consider the welfare of the nation before calling for street protests.
“The election enthusiasm has not yet settled. Calling for protests before the government assumes office is unfortunate and sends a negative signal. The opposition must plan activities responsibly, keeping the people’s interests in mind,” he said.
The remarks came a day after the 11-party alliance called for countrywide protests against alleged post-election violence, repression, and human rights violations.
Asked about the role of opposition leaders in the new parliament, he noted that Tarique Rahman’s recent visits to opposition leaders’ homes were unprecedented in Bangladesh politics and could foster constructive relations.
He expressed hope that the opposition would offer criticism without disrupting governance or causing public inconvenience.
On the new cabinet formation, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said he had no detailed knowledge but expected a smaller cabinet.
He emphasised that those who contributed to the fight against previous fascist regimes, who are capable, corruption-free, and popular among the people, should be included.
Some alliance members are also expected to be part of the new cabinet.
Reflecting on General MAG Osmani’s legacy, he said the celebrated freedom fighter was denied the recognition he deserved in an independent Bangladesh, which was a loss for the nation.
He praised Osmani’s disciplined leadership, moral courage, and steadfast defense of democracy, including his opposition to the 1975 one-party rule.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed also supported posthumously awarding General Osmani the rank of Field Marshal.
He proposed that a delegation of retired military officials formally recommend this to the government, pledging his personal support for the initiative.
The event was organised by the Retired Armed Forces Officers’ Welfare Association (RAOWA) and attended by former Air Vice Marshal AG Mahmud, Major (retd) Jamil D Ahsan, economist Mahbub Ullah, and RAOWA members including Air Commodore (retd) Md Shafiqul Islam.
