In a move aimed at preserving the city’s aesthetics, BNP has started removing all banners and festoons across Dhaka that bear the names of party leaders and activists.
The party plans to complete the removal within the next three days.
The programme was inaugurated on Friday morning in front of the BNP central office in Noapara by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who personally took down one of the banners.
Speaking at the event, Rizvi said, “While banners and festoons serve as a medium for political expression, it is not appropriate if they violate citizens’ rights or spoil the city’s appearance. Following the directive of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, the city units of BNP, along with the central Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, have decided to remove banners and festoons from the capital.”
He added, “Banners expressing grief over the death of Begum Khaleda Zia will remain for a few more days, but all other banners will be removed first.”
Rizvi also emphasised, “In a civilized country, it is not acceptable to place banners randomly along streets or in residential areas. Political banners may be installed for programmes, but once the event is over, it is our responsibility to remove them.”
He further said that this initiative would gradually be implemented across the country.
