Police have arrested Fahim Al Hasan, husband of a Jahangirnagar University student whose bloodied body was discovered on Sunday. He was produced in court on Monday morning, with authorities seeking a five-day remand.
The incident has sparked concern within the university administration and various student organsations, who have demanded a neutral investigation and swift trial for those involved.
The deceased student has been identified as Sharmin Jahan (Khadiza).
Ashulia Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md Azgar Hossain said that Fahim was initially taken into custody for questioning following the incident. Later, on Sunday night, he was formally arrested in a case filed by Sharmin’s uncle, Monirul Islam.
According to the case’s First Information Report (FIR), Sharmin Jahan was a fourth-year student in the Department of Public Administration at Jahangirnagar University. Her husband, Fahim Al Hasan, was a fourth-year student in the Economics Department at Dhaka College.
Following a romantic relationship, they married on 24 June last year and later informed both families. Subsequently, in September, they moved into a house in the Islamnagar area adjacent to the university.
The FIR states that marital discord began between them shortly after the wedding over various family matters. Sharmin had informed her family members about this.
According to FIR sources, on 15 March around 4:30pm, Fahim called Sharmin’s uncle, Monirul Islam, and informed him that Sharmin was seriously ill. Upon receiving the news, he went to the house and found Sharmin lying on the bed in a bloodied state.
Later, with the help of locals, she was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors declared her dead.
The FIR states that deep cut injuries were found on the right side of Sharmin’s forehead and head.
