Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Suvendu Adhikari as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, selecting a resolute leader to navigate the state through significant policy shifts, including the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and a crackdown on undocumented immigration.
The decision reflects the party’s need for a figure with significant “street cred” and governance experience to fulfil manifesto promises.
Speaking at the BJP Legislature Party meeting on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, acting as the central observer, set a firm tone for the new administration, stating, “Now infiltration and cow smuggling will become impossible in West Bengal.”
By choosing Adhikari, the BJP has sought to dismantle the Trinamool Congress (TMC) narrative that the state would be governed by “bohiragatos” (outsiders), reports The Indian Express.
Adhikari, who previously served as a minister in the second TMC government, is viewed as a leader in the same “streetfighter” mould as Mamata Banerjee, capable of handling complex administrative issues with a firm hand.
Party insiders indicate that a high priority for the new government is the publication of a white paper regarding alleged corruption during the TMC’s tenure. Adhikari has reiterated plans to establish a dedicated Commission, which may result in several opposition leaders coming under official scrutiny.
Adhikari’s political journey began with the Congress’s student wing, Chhatra Parishad, before he and his father, three-time MP Sisir Adhikari, joined the TMC in 2000. He rose to national prominence during the 2007 Nandigram land acquisition protests, eventually defeating Mamata Banerjee in two consecutive elections.
RSS has reportedly found Adhikari, who identifies as a “Sanatani,” to be an acceptable choice due to his focus on “Hindu rejuvenation”. In 2024, he led protests the treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh, and campaign posters in Nandigram frequently depicted him as a “saviour of Hindus”.
The incoming government inherits a strained financial situation and a host of infrastructure challenges. A critical immediate task is the BJP’s pledge to implement 7th Pay Commission recommendations and clear pending Dearness Allowance arrears within 45 days, an undertaking expected to cost the state an additional Rs42,000 crore.
Moreover, the government has promised:
- Monthly financial assistance of Rs3,000 to women, surpassing the previous Lakshmir Bhandar scheme.
- A monthly allowance of Rs3,000 for unemployed youth.
- The creation of one crore (10 million) new jobs and self-employment opportunities over the next five years to curb outward migration.
On the security front, the administration is prioritising the investigation into the recent murder of Adhikari’s personal assistant, Chandranath Rath, who was shot dead near Kolkata, while also working to ensure that post-poll violence does not escalate further.
