Normal life was disrupted in parts of Jharkhand on Tuesday as BJP workers enforced a state-wide shutdown to protest police action against job aspirants during their march to the state assembly a day earlier.
The protesters had marched on Monday over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Police used water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse them in Ranchi, The Hindu.
Most schools and business establishments remained closed on Tuesday, while vehicular movement dropped sharply in Ranchi and several other cities.
BJP state president Aditya Sahu said the shutdown would remain in force from 8am to midnight, with essential services exempted.
The BJP described the police action as “atrocities” against students and accused the JMM-led government of using force instead of addressing their grievances.
The bandh has affected several parts of the state, with the impact particularly visible in the state capital and other major cities.
