A bill providing legal and constitutional protection and indemnity for “July fighters” who participated in the July mass uprising has been unanimously passed by voice vote in the 13th National Parliament.

The bill was tabled on Wednesday by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed during a parliamentary session presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed. It was subsequently passed by unanimous voice vote.

The “July Mass Uprising (Protection and Determination of Liability) Ordinance, 2026” bill paves the way for the withdrawal of all civil and criminal cases and legal proceedings filed against those who participated in the uprising.

According to the law, these complaints will be dismissed following prescribed provisions. Additionally, any new case or legal action against any individual involved in this uprising will be legally considered barred.

On the same day, parliament also passed the “Anti-Terrorism Act Amendment Ordinance Bill, 2026”. This ensures the legal basis for banning the political activities of the ousted Awami League.

Under this new amendment, the government will have the power to ban any political party or organisation on charges of involvement in terrorism, in addition to any individual or entity.
