In a significant diplomatic gesture, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay sent a floral bouquet to BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia on Sunday.
The gesture came during a meeting between the visiting Bhutanese leader and a BNP delegation at Hotel Intercontinental at 8pm. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir led the three-member team.
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Organising Secretary Shama Obaid were also there.
According to party sources, the Bhutanese prime minister inquired about Khaleda Zia’s health condition during the courtesy meeting and extended his good wishes for her speedy recovery.
Fakhrul later confirmed that he personally delivered the bouquet to the hospitalized BNP Chairperson at Evercare Hospital following the meeting.
The discussion between the BNP delegation and the Bhutanese leader also encompassed broader bilateral matters, with both sides exchanging views on trade, business, energy and other areas of mutual interest between the two South Asian nations.
Bhutanese Prime Minister Tobgay, who arrived in Dhaka on Saturday for a two-day state visit, had earlier been formally welcomed by Chief Adviser to the interim government Muhammad Yunus at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The exchange marks a notable diplomatic engagement during the Bhutanese leader’s packed itinerary, which has included official meetings with Bangladeshi government representatives and other stakeholders.
BNP leaders described the meeting as cordial and productive, emphasising the importance of maintaining parliamentary and people-to-people contacts between the two neighbouring countries.
