Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have seized a significant cache of firearms, high explosives, and narcotics in separate operations conducted along the frontiers of Rajshahi, Dinajpur, and Moulvibazar.
The operations were carried out as part of increased security measures ahead of the upcoming 13th parliamentary election to prevent sabotage and the illegal entry of weapons.
Seizures in Rajshahi and Dinajpur
In Rajshahi, a BGB operation resulted in the recovery of two foreign-made pistols, four magazines, and eight rounds of ammunition. Alongside the weaponry, the border guards also confiscated a large quantity of narcotics and various electronic goods.
Simultaneously, in the early hours of 4 February 2026, a patrol team from the Phulbari Battalion (29 BGB) conducted a special operation in the Gilabari border area under Dinajpur’s Kotwali Police Station.
Acting on intelligence regarding a potential smuggling attempt, the BGB team took up strategic positions near border pillar 308/19-S. At approximately 3:25am, the patrol spotted several suspects moving 200 yards inside Bangladeshi territory.
As the BGB moved to surround them, the smugglers fled across the border, abandoning six sacks.
Upon searching the bags, BGB recovered two foreign-made one-shooter guns, four rounds of ammunition, 100 bottles of Phensedyl, 500 intoxicating injections, 25 bottles of foreign liquor, and 27 bottles of Amalkul.
Lt Col AM Zaber Bin Jabber, commanding officer of the Phulbari Battalion, stated that the unit remains committed to preventing criminal activities and maintaining peace in the border regions.
Explosives recovered in Moulvibazar
In another major operation on 3 February 2026, the Beanibazar Battalion (52 BGB) recovered high explosives and firearms from the Barlekha border in Moulvibazar.
Following a tip-off about miscreants entering the country with illegal arms near border pillar 1375/M, a coordinated raid was launched by Lt Col Md Ataur Rahman, Commanding Officer of 52 BGB, and Major M Zahid, who led a team from the election base camp at Choto Lekha High School.
Sensing the BGB’s presence, the suspects fled into the deep forest under the cover of darkness.
During a subsequent search of the Taradarm area in Dakshin Shahbazpur Union, the team recovered 24 tubes of Powergel 90, which is a high explosive manufactured by SBL Energy Limited in Nagpur, India, as well as 23 detonators, 15 metres of detonator cord, and three pipe guns.
Election security and investigations
BGB noted that the smuggling of such high explosives appears to be a clear attempt to disrupt national security and the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections. Detailed investigations are currently underway in coordination with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
In a statement, Lt Col Md Ataur Rahman Sujon reaffirmed that the BGB remains alert and prepared to ensure a free, fair, and neutral election process while securing the nation’s borders.
Additionally, a separate operation by the Army’s Azimpur Camp also resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of arms.
