Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), assisted by local residents, thwarted an alleged attempt by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push 12 people into Bangladesh through the Chakpara border in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Friday night.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam Chowdhury, commanding officer of BGB’s Mahananda-59 Battalion, members of the BSF’s 119 Battalion from the Mallik-Sultanpur Border Outpost reportedly switched off border floodlights near border pillar No. 183/3-S at around 11pm before attempting to send the group across the frontier.
Acting on intelligence information, a BGB patrol team rushed to the area, while local villagers also joined the border guards to strengthen vigilance along the border.
The 12 individuals were reportedly waiting in the Muslimpara area, approximately 600 yards inside Indian territory from the zero line.
At around 4:30am, BSF personnel took the group back to a holding centre in Malda, India, Lt Col Tajul said.
He added that the BGB remains on maximum alert to prevent illegal border crossings and alleged push-in attempts.
Border patrols and intelligence surveillance have been intensified to ensure security along the frontier, he said.
