Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained two suspected smugglers and seized a variety of Indian goods worth over Tk66 lakh during a day-long anti-smuggling operation at Satkhira border on Monday.
The operation was conducted by BGB teams under Bhomra, Hijaldi, Kakdanga, and Bakal checkpost Border Outposts (BOP) in Satkhira Sadar and Kalaroa upazilas. The seized items include Indian shrimp fry, mobile phone parts, medicines, and a Bangladeshi truck.
The detainees have been identified as truck driver Md Afridi Hossain, 23, and his assistant Md Mehedi Hasan, 25. Both are residents of Padmashakhra village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila.
According to BGB sources, acting on a tip-off, a special team from Bhomra BOP intercepted a Bangladeshi truck (Registration no. Dhaka Metro T-189554) at Bhomra BGB checkpost.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered a large quantity of Indian shrimp fry stored in 10 plastic bottles and subsequently detained Afridi and Mehedi.
In separate drives, a team from Hijaldi BOP seized Indian mobile phone parts at Barali mor in Kalaroa Upazila, while Kakdanga BOP team recovered Indian medicines from Keragachhi area. Bakal checkpost team seized another consignment of Indian mobile phone parts from Shreerampur in Satkhira Sadar.
The total market value of the seized goods is estimated at Tk66,06,600.
Commanding Officer of the 33 BGB Battalion in Satkhira Lt Col Kazi Ashiqur Rahman, confirmed the matter and said the seized goods have been deposited with Satkhira customs. He further added that the BGB would continue its special operations to prevent smuggling activities in the border regions.
