World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA)’s fan-favourite wrestler El Grande Americano was among the spectators at the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.
The masked wrestling star was seen in the stands alongside his girlfriend, Andrea Bazarte, a former announcer for the Mexican wrestling promotion AAA. Footage of the pair at the stadium was later shared on WWE Espanol’s official social media channels.
El Grande Americano has become one of the fastest-rising names in professional wrestling. Performing under the masked persona in AAA, he has quickly established himself as one of the promotion’s leading attractions.
The wrestler is portrayed by German performer Marcel Barthel, who previously competed under the ring name Ludwig Kaiser. His recent success includes a widely praised mask vs. mask contest against the Original El Grande Americano, who was unmasked as the Olympian wrestler Chad Gable. Following the bout, Gable returned to WWE programming as a fan-favourite character.
On the pitch, England edged hosts Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic encounter to book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Norway on Saturday.
