The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Tuesday expressed its condolences and postponed two Bangladesh Premier League matches in Sylhet following the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in Dhaka earlier that morning.
Khaleda Zia, the country’s first female prime minister, died at 6am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital. She was 80.
In a condolence message, the BCB said it remembered with gratitude her contribution and support to the journey of Bangladesh cricket. The board noted that during her time as prime minister, her backing for the development of the sport helped lay the foundations of the country’s cricketing infrastructure.
In a separate statement, the BCB announced that, in solidarity with national mourning and out of respect for Khaleda Zia’s memory, it had postponed Tuesday’s two matches in the Sylhet phase of the BPL.
The games, scheduled to be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, were between Sylhet Titans and Chattogram Royals, followed by Dhaka Capitals against Rangpur Riders. The board said revised fixtures would be announced in due course.
