FC Bayern Munich produced a remarkable second-half comeback to beat 1. FSV Mainz 05 4-3, recovering from a three-goal deficit to extend their winning run.
Mainz stunned the Bundesliga champions with a dominant first-half display, racing into a 3-0 lead through goals from Dominik Kohr, Paul Nebel and Sheraldo Becker. Bayern, who failed to register a shot on target before the break, looked out of sorts as the hosts took full control.
However, the game turned after the interval following decisive substitutions by coach Vincent Kompany, who introduced Harry Kane and Michael Olise.
Nicolas Jackson sparked the comeback in the 53rd minute, finishing from close range after good work down the flank. Olise then reduced the deficit further with a curling strike, before playing a key role in the equaliser — his delivery eventually turned in by Jamal Musiala.
Just two minutes later, Kane completed the turnaround, scoring from close range to seal a dramatic victory and his seventh consecutive goal for Bayern in all competitions.
Olise was central to the fightback, contributing to three of Bayern’s four goals with his creativity and movement proving decisive.
Kompany had made eight changes to his starting line-up following Bayern’s German Cup semi-final success, aiming to rest key players ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain. The decision initially backfired as Mainz exploited defensive lapses, but Bayern’s depth ultimately proved decisive.
Mainz, who had previously handed Bayern their last away league defeat in December 2024, now remain eight points above the relegation play-off spot with three matches left.
Bayern, meanwhile, head into their European showdown with renewed momentum, having now won nine consecutive matches in all competitions.
