Barcelona produced a dominant second-half display to defeat Lyon 4-0 in the Women’s Champions League final in Oslo on Saturday, with Ewa Pajor and Salma Paralluelo each scoring twice to secure the Spanish club’s fourth European trophy. Lyon, who came into the final as the competition’s most decorated side with eight titles, were unable to add a record-extending ninth.
The first half told a different story. Lyon controlled possession, restricted Barcelona and had the ball in the net after 14 minutes when Lindsey Heaps converted following a Cata Coll error, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside. The French side continued to press but struggled to create clear chances, and their first-half dominance ultimately counted for nothing.
Barcelona broke the deadlock in the 55th minute through Pajor. Patri Guijarro won the ball deep in her own half, drove forward and picked out the Polish forward on her right, who finished clinically from a tight angle. Pajor added her second 14 minutes later, blasting a pass from Esmee Brugts into the net from close range after Lyon’s defence lost track of her completely. The double strike visibly deflated Lyon, who struggled to get the ball forward in the closing stages.
Paralluelo then put the result beyond any doubt with a stunning long-range effort in the 90th minute before adding a fourth on the counter three minutes later, completing a breathtaking second-half showing that sent the travelling Barcelona supporters into chants of “Campeones” well before the final whistle.
The victory carried particular emotion for Barcelona winger Caroline Graham Hansen, who grew up just a few hundred metres from the Ullevaal Stadium where the final was played. The Norwegian was visibly moved by the occasion and spoke warmly about winning on home soil.
“There has been a lot going on all season, so to win at home and close everything we have been going through, it is amazing. It is extra-special to win at home in front of so many fans from Barcelona. This is my home ground. I grew up here. I know every metre of this grass. It is very special,” she said.
Lyon captain Ada Hegerberg, her Norway teammate, was philosophical in defeat. “It was not our day today. We did not really manage to exploit the spaces in behind them. That is the tough part of these games. We have been privileged to enjoy so much success over the years, so we cannot stand here and hang our heads when it does not go our way,” the 30-year-old said.
