Production at the first unit of the coal-fired Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Parbatipur, Dinajpur, which has a total capacity of 525 MW, has been suspended due to a mechanical failure.
The 125 MW unit was shut down at approximately 12pm Friday. Prior to the shutdown, this unit required a daily supply of 700 to 800 metric tonnes of coal and contributed 45 MW to 50 MW of electricity to the national grid.
Abu Bakkar Siddique, chief engineer of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant, stated that the production at the first unit ceased after a water pump was damaged.
He further noted that repair work is currently in progress and expressed optimism that production would resume in a very short time once the repairs are completed.
At present, only the plant’s third unit, which has a capacity of 275 MW, remains in operation. The second unit, with a capacity of 125 MW, has been shut down since November 2020.
