A former leader of the proscribed Chhatra League, Nurul Azim Rony, has allegedly issued threats via social media against two Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).
On Saturday morning, Rony posted a status on Facebook directed at the OCs of Kotwali and Chandgaon police stations, stating, “Do not blame us if your wives or children fall into danger.”
Rony is the former general secretary of the Chattogram City unit of the Chhatra League and a member of the Awami League’s Central Youth and Sports Sub-committee.
The officers targeted in the post are OC Noor Hossain Mamun of Chandgaon Police Station and OC Aftab Uddin of Kotwali Police Station.
Police officials suspect the threats are a reaction to recent crackdowns on political activists. On Friday evening, Chandgaon police apprehended AKM Asifur Rahman Chowdhury, the president of the Lohagara Upazila Chhatra League, in the Chandgaon Residential Area.
According to police, Chowdhury is an accused in several cases involving violence and sabotage during the July movement.
This follows a separate operation on April 25, when Kotwali police arrested 12 members of the Awami League and Chhatra League during raids conducted to prevent potential sabotage and “flash” processions.
It is believed the social media post was made in direct response to these law enforcement actions.
OC Aftab Uddin of Kotwali Police Station remarked that the arrest of the Lohagara BCL president likely prompted the threat. He added that the matter has been treated with gravity and reported to higher authorities.
Attempts to contact OC Noor Hossain Mamun for comment were unsuccessful.
Commenting on the situation, CMP Assistant Commissioner (Media) Aminur Rashid noted that social media has become a significant platform for criminal activity.
He stated that a specialised unit of the CMP is continuously monitoring these platforms, observing that criminals often issue such statements from remote locations. Rony could not be reached for a statement regarding the post.
