The Mymensingh District Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested Md Delowar Hossain, a leader of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), on charges of involvement in and planning of subversive activities.
He served as the former joint general secretary of the organisation’s Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit.
Police sources said the arrest took place on Monday night during an operation in Mymensingh city. The drive was conducted to prevent potential sabotage surrounding the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League.
Mymensingh District DB Police Inspector Mahbubul Haque confirmed that Delowar Hossain was apprehended based on specific allegations of involvement in subversive acts.
Earlier, the Jahangirnagar University administration cancelled the undergraduate and postgraduate certificates of Delowar Hossain. The decision was made following recommendations from an investigation committee tasked with probing the attacks on protesting teachers and students during the July 2024 mass uprising.
In addition to these administrative actions, Delowar faces multiple legal proceedings, including cases involving attempted murder, which are currently pending at Ashulia Police Station.
