The High Court on Tuesday ordered eight individuals, who were previously acquitted by a trial court in the 2007 Zaman murder case in Kishoreganj, to surrender.
The High Court bench, comprising Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Biswajit Debnath, passed the order following a preliminary hearing of a revision petition.
It also issued a rule asking why the trial court’s verdict acquitting the accused should not be scrapped.
Advocate Md Mostofa Jamal Bhuiyan represented the petitioner during the court proceedings.
The case dates back to November 23, 2007, when Zaman, the son of Borju Mia, was murdered in the Deopur area of Karimganj upazila in Kishoreganj over a long-standing land dispute. The following day, Borju Mia filed a murder case at the local police station.
On February 22, 2011, a court framed charges against eight accused persons: Rafiq, Rakib, Siddique, Golap Mia, Ronju Mia, Dukhu Mia, Ripon Mia, and Ranu Mia, all residents of the same area.
Following the conclusion of the trial, Sabrina Ali, the judge of the Kishoreganj Additional Sessions Judge 1st Court, delivered a verdict on June 3, 2025, acquitting all eight defendants.
Dissatisfied with the lower court’s decision, Zaman’s sister and a witness in the case, Hawa Akter, filed a revision petition with the High Court, leading to the latest directive.
