Bangladesh’s historic debut campaign at the Women’s Asian Games Qualifying Hockey Tournament came to a bittersweet close on Wednesday as they fell 3–1 to Chinese Taipei in the final at the GBK Hockey Field in Jakarta, Indonesia. Despite a bright start, a series of costly individual errors ultimately decided the match against a more experienced side.
It had been a remarkable tournament for a Bangladesh side making their very first appearance at senior international level. They opened with a thrilling 5–5 draw against Chinese Taipei on 23 April, before recording back-to-back victories: a 3–2 win over Uzbekistan on 24 April, and a 2–1 triumph against Hong Kong on 27 April, to top Pool A with seven points.
By finishing in the top four, they had already secured the prize many thought beyond reach: a place at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, scheduled for September–October at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium. That alone marked a historic achievement for Bangladeshi women’s sport.
Their semi-final on 28 April brought more magic. Forward Airin Akter Riya produced a stunning hat-trick, scoring in the 8th, 57th, and 58th minutes, to sweep aside Singapore 3–1 and set up a final against Chinese Taipei, who had edged hosts Indonesia 3–2 in the other semi-final.
Wednesday’s decider began promisingly for Bangladesh. Skipper Arpita Pal converted a penalty corner in the 8th minute, her shot beating the Chinese Taipei goalkeeper to give the side the lead. They defended resolutely through the remainder of the first quarter, frustrating their opponents and carrying their advantage into the break.
The second quarter, however, brought a turning point. A back pass from the right flank was miscontrolled by Niladri Nila inside the circle, and Wang Yu-Chiuei pounced on the loose ball to level at 1–1. It was an avoidable error, and the disappointment was plain to see on the faces of the Bangladesh players.
Chinese Taipei took the lead early in the third quarter. Mao Yi-Hsuan collected a pass inside the circle, rounded the goalkeeper with composure, and slotted home with a diagonal strike to make it 2–1. Bangladesh had a penalty corner shortly afterwards but failed to convert.
In the 40th minute, a second goalkeeping error proved fatal. With no clear danger apparent, goalkeeper Himadri Akter came off her line unnecessarily and was caught out of position. Huang Yu-Ting coolly collected a teammate’s pass and rolled the ball into the empty net to make it 3–1.
Bangladesh pressed hard in the fourth quarter, seeking a way back into the contest, but the Chinese Taipei defence, vastly experienced from two previous Asian Games campaigns, held firm. The final whistle confirmed a 3–1 defeat, though it could not diminish what had been an extraordinary week for the side.
For a team on their very first senior international assignment, reaching the final of an Asian Games qualifier is a feat that few could have anticipated. With Asian Games experience now awaiting them in Japan, the future looks promising for Arpita Pal, Airin Akter Riya, Kona Akter, and the rest of this young Bangladesh squad.
