Bangladesh U20 grabbed control early against Pakistan in the SAFF U20 clash in Maldives on Tuesday, but wasteful finishing kept the score locked at 0-0 at the break. Ronan Benjamin Sullivan stole the spotlight with relentless pressing, yet Bangladesh failed to turn dominance into goals.
Sullivan set the tone from the first whistle. He hunted Pakistan’s backline, closed passing lanes and forced rushed clearances. Pakistan reacted quickly, tightened markers around him and tried to suffocate his space. Even though his off the ball movements looked good, yet he was not dominating with the ball as he was marked tightly.
That adjustment opened doors elsewhere. Md Manik and Md Mursed Ali found pockets, received the ball in space and drove at the defence. Bangladesh built attacks with intent, but the final pass kept letting them down.
Mursed, in particular, drifted into a pattern. He chose the shot when the pass screamed louder. That decision-making killed momentum and frustrated teammates who made smarter runs.
The clearest example arrived on 44 minutes. Bangladesh broke through quickly after Nazmul Huda Faysal launched a counter. Mursed surged down the left with acres ahead, but the angle tightened. Sullivan peeled into prime scoring territory, unmarked and ready. Mursed ignored the obvious square ball and dragged his shot wide, a choice that summed up the half.
Moments later, Bangladesh spurned another opening. In stoppage time, Manik slipped a neat ball into Faysal, who found space inside the box but lifted his effort over the bar. Two chances, same outcome, no composure.
Pakistan’s defensive plan deserves credit. They locked onto Sullivan, disrupted his rhythm and forced Bangladesh to beat them through others. Bangladesh managed that part, but failed at the final step.
The pattern stayed clear throughout. Bangladesh controlled tempo, pressed high and moved the ball well, yet lacked the clinical edge in the final third. Good structure met poor execution.
The crowd in Maldives tried to tilt the balance. Bangladeshi fans filled the stands, roared every press and pushed the team forward like a twelfth man. The energy surged, but the finishing did not follow.
The second half now demands sharper decisions. One clean pass instead of a hopeful shot will crack this game open. If Bangladesh keep feeding Sullivan and release the ball earlier around him, Pakistan’s backline will not hold much longer.
