A court has granted a two-day remand for Fahim Al Hasan, a Dhaka College student and husband of murdered Jahangirnagar University (JU) student Sharmin Jahan, after he was arrested in connection with her death at a rented house in Savar.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman passed the order after a hearing on Tuesday.
The accused was produced in court from jail today, and the remand hearing was held in his presence. After the hearing, the court granted a two-day remand.
Earlier, on 16 March, the accused was produced in court. Subsequently, the investigating officer of the case, SI Shahiduzzaman of Ashulia Police Station, filed an application seeking five days’ remand. State prosecutor Biswajit Devnath argued in favor of the remand.
Fahim’s lawyer, Syed Jahidul Islam, filed a bail application seeking cancellation of the remand. However, during the hearing, the investigating officer was not present in court. Therefore, the court sent him to jail and set 24 March for the remand hearing.
Earlier, on 15 March, the bloodied body of Sharmin Jahan, a student of the 51st batch of the university’s Public Administration Department, was recovered from a rented house in the Islamnagar area adjacent to the campus. When taken to the hospital, the attending doctor declared her dead.
Sharmin Jahan’s uncle, Monirul Islam, filed a murder case at Ashulia Police Station on 15 March. After the case was filed, police arrested Fahim from the Islamnagar area in Ashulia around 2:30am that night.
The case alleges that after marrying secretly without informing their families on 24 June last year, they began living in a rented house in the Islamnagar area of Ashulia. Since their marriage, there had been ongoing disputes over various family matters.
On the day of the incident, 15 March, sometime between 11am and 4pm, Fahim, along with unidentified accomplices, allegedly planned and killed Sharmin by hacking her on the forehead and head with sharp weapons before fleeing. Upon receiving news, relatives rescued her in a bloodied state and took her to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors declared her dead.
