Bangladesh lost five wickets for just 107 runs in 32.3 overs on a turning pitch in the second ODI against the West Indies at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday. Their scoring rate remained sluggish at 3.29 runs per over as the visitors’ spinners dominated proceedings.
Opting to bat first, captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s plan for a score around 230 looked increasingly ambitious as his side struggled to build momentum. Soumya Sarkar provided the only significant resistance, scoring 45 off 89 balls before falling to Akeal Hosein in the 31st over. Sarkar hit three fours and one six in his patient innings.
The top order failed to provide a platform, with Saif Hassan (6) dismissed early by Hosein, and Tawhid Hridoy (12) falling to Gudakesh Motie. Najmul Hossain Shanto (15) and Mahidul Islam Ankon (17) were both dismissed by Alick Athanaze as Bangladesh slipped to 96 for 4. Sarkar’s dismissal soon after left the hosts in trouble at 103 for 5.
At the crease were captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 0 from 7 deliveries and Nasum Ahmed on 2 from 10 balls. Bangladesh’s struggle was reflected in the number of dot balls faced and the lack of boundaries, with only eight fours and one six hit so far in the innings.
The West Indies spinners impressed once again, led by Akeal Hosein, who took 2 for 18 in 7.3 overs. Alick Athanaze also claimed two wickets, conceding just 11 runs in his two overs. Gudakesh Motie chipped in with one wicket for 19 runs from his four overs.
Bangladesh made one change from the first ODI, bringing in Nasum Ahmed for Taskin Ahmed on a spin-friendly surface. West Indies made two changes, with Akeal Hosein replacing Jayden Seales and Ackeem Auguste making his debut in place of Romario Shepherd.
