Bangladesh fought back strongly in the morning session of day three of the first Test against Pakistan at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Pakistan had resumed on 179 for 1 on Saturday with a lead of 243 runs after Azan Awais ended day two unbeaten on 85.
The young opener continued his fine form and calmly completed a superb century on Test debut. Azan looked settled for a big score before Bangladesh finally broke through.
Taskin Ahmed provided the first breakthrough when Azan edged behind after scoring 103 off 165 balls. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto took a sharp catch at slip.
Taskin struck again soon after with another big wicket. Pakistan captain Shan Masood was tempted into a drive and Shadman Islam completed the catch at point. Shan made just 9.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz then turned the session firmly in Bangladesh’s favour.
The off spinner removed Imam ul Haq, Saud Shakeel for zero, and debutant Abdullah Fazal. All three left handers fell to Mehidy as Bangladesh tightened control.
Abdullah had looked impressive during his debut innings and scored a valuable 60 before his dismissal.
Pakistan were nearly in deeper trouble when Salman Agha was dismissed for zero with the score on 231 for 5. But Bangladesh’s celebrations were cut short after Taskin Ahmed was found to have overstepped. The no ball gave Salman a major lifeline.
By lunch, Pakistan reached 251 for 5 with Salman Agha and Mohammad Rizwan at the crease, trying to rebuild after Bangladesh’s excellent session with the ball.
