Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood told Parliament on Monday that Bangladesh is considering the joint construction of a 683‑megawatt hydropower plant with Nepal.
“In a bid to import more hydropower from Nepal, the issue of jointly constructing a 683‑MW hydropower plant is under review,” he said in reply to a starred question from ruling party lawmaker Fahima Nasrin (Women Seat‑29).
The minister noted Bangladesh currently imports 40 megawatts of hydropower from Nepal under ongoing energy cooperation with the Himalayan nation, BSS reports.
He added that if legal measures are required in the regional hydropower sector in the future, “necessary steps will be taken accordingly.”
