The government has suspended Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdullah Al Zahir following allegations of drug use and DJ parties at his property in the capital.
He has also been attached to the Police Special Training School (PSTS) in Betbunia, Rangamati.
The decision was announced on Saturday through a notification issued by the Police-1 Branch of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to the notification, a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a raid on 19 October at Zahir’s property in the Police Housing residential area under Bhatara Police Station.
Police said drug consumption and a DJ party were taking place at the property during the operation.
Detectives seized cannabis, yaba tablets, alcohol and equipment used for consuming yaba.
Media reports said 85 people, including 26 women, were detained during the raid.
The notification, signed by Ministry of Home Affairs Senior Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, said the incident had created a negative impression of the police among the public and seriously damaged the image of Bangladesh Police.
It described the alleged activities as contrary to professional conduct and departmental discipline.
Under Rule 12(1) of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, Zahir has been temporarily suspended with effect from 25 October.
He will receive a subsistence allowance during the suspension period in accordance with the rules, the notification said.
