Bangladesh High Commission in Maldives community and for upholding the dignity of Bangladesh on foreign soil, according to a press release.
To mark International Migrants Day and National Expatriates’ Day 2025, the mission organised a commemorative event and discussion meeting, presenting awards to international organisations, humanitarian employers, and expatriate journalists.
In a press release issued this Tuesday, the High Commission confirmed that the Maldives Red Crescent and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Maldives were awarded honorary crests for their significant roles in ensuring the rights and safety of migrant workers. The awards were received by Vice President Hud Ibrahim and Treasurer Yasha Sharif on behalf of the Maldives Red Crescent, and Uraiba Asif on behalf of IOM Maldives.
A special humanitarian honor was also conferred upon Ishak Musa for his long-standing commitment to ethical recruitment and his exemplary initiative in providing employment to a speech-and-hearing-impaired Bangladeshi national. Additionally, certificates of appreciation were presented to Emran Hossain and Md. Omar Faruq Khandakar for their dedicated contributions to expatriate journalism, highlighting the challenges and successes of the community.
In his keynote address, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Maldives, Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad (or as per current official Dr Md Nazmul Islam), described expatriates as the “primary driving force” of the national economy. He emphasised that the remittances sent by migrants are the backbone of the country’s economic strength.
The High Commissioner further stated the High Commission has adopted a “Zero Tolerance” policy against the fraud and exploitation of migrant workers.
Plans are underway to send more skilled and trained manpower to the Maldives to meet local market demands.
He urged all Bangladeshi citizens to strictly adhere to local laws and maintain peaceful coexistence to enhance the image of Bangladesh. The event featured the reading of messages from the Honorable President, the Chief Adviser, and the Advisers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare. A documentary showcasing the bilateral friendship between Bangladesh and Maldives was screened, and the program concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting led by the High Commissioner alongside members of the expatriate community.
