Despite India’s commanding form in the ongoing Asia Cup, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons believes his side are capable of pulling off an upset in their Super Four clash on Wednesday in Dubai.
India have looked a class apart in the tournament so far, leaving many fans and pundits expecting an easy win against Litton Das and his team. However, Simmons is urging focus on the match itself, not past performances.
“Every team has the ability to beat India. The game is played on the day. It is not about what India have done before. It is about what happens on Wednesday,” Simmons told reporters.
“It is what happens during that three-and-a-half-hour period, and we will try to play as best as we can and hope to force mistakes in India’s armoury. That is the way we win games.”
Bangladesh have only beaten India once in 17 T20 internationals, and that lone victory came in a bilateral series. In multinational tournaments, India have remained unbeaten against the Tigers in the shortest format.
Simmons acknowledged that belief will be key if Bangladesh are to overturn the odds.
“There has to be belief. Having sat down today and spoken about things, there is a lot of belief that we have that chance,” he said.
“If we get a break in the game, we have to hold on to it and take the chances, and we will have an opportunity to win a game against India.”
