Bangladesh are on the verge of whitewashing Australia for the first time in a three-match ODI series, having already secured the series 2-0. Left-handed opener Soumya Sarkar said on Saturday that the Tigers are now targeting a clean sweep against the visitors.
After a practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Soumya was asked about the prospect of whitewashing Australia in the ODI series.
“Of course, it would be a huge achievement. First of all, what I mentioned earlier, winning the series itself is already a massive accomplishment for us. We should have celebrated that much more,” he said.
Australia have been whitewashed in a three-match ODI series only six times. England have achieved the feat on three occasions, while South Africa have done it twice and New Zealand once. If Bangladesh win the third ODI, they will become only the fourth nation to complete a 3-0 sweep against Australia in a three-match bilateral ODI series.
“If we can win 3-0, it will be an even bigger achievement for our team. That is what all of us will be aiming for. We will play positive cricket,” Soumya said while outlining Bangladesh’s approach for the final match. “The team that performs well in all three departments will be the one that wins.”
However, he also admitted that Bangladesh did not celebrate the series victory as much as they perhaps should have.
Soumya said, “Winning the series is a huge achievement for all of us, and we should have celebrated it much more because it is such a significant accomplishment. I don’t know to what extent we actually did, but we certainly should have.”
