The court has rejected the bail application of former Member of Parliament for Noakhali-2 (Senbagh-Sonaimuri) constituency and Chairman of Bengal Group, Morshed Alam, in a case filed on charges of embezzlement. On Monday, after the hearing, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez issued this order.
ACC Prosecutor Mohammad Tariqul Islam confirmed this information. He stated that Morshed Alam’s lawyer applied for bail on his behalf. The ACC opposed the bail. After hearing both sides, the court ordered the rejection of his bail. Earlier, on September 8, he was shown arrested in this case.
On May 4, Deputy Director of the ACC, Sheikh Golam Mawla, filed the case as the complainant. The case names Morshed Alam and two others as accused. The other two accused are Morshed Alam’s son, Saiful Alam, managing director (MD) of Bengal Concept and Holdings Limited, and Morshed Alam’s brother, Md Jasim Uddin, chairman of Bengal Commercial Bank.
The case alleges that for purchasing land for the area office of National Life Insurance Company, owned by National Life Insurance Company Limited Chairman Morshed Alam and his brother Md Jasim Uddin, there was a conflict of interest. By concealing this and purchasing the land at an abnormal price, they embezzled Tk2.86 crore.
On the night of April 8, DB Police arrested Morshed Alam from Gulshan-2. Since then, he has been in jail.
Morshed Alam is also the chairman of the private television channel RTV. He was elected Member of Parliament from the Noakhali-2 (part of Senbagh and Sonaimuri upazilas) constituency in the 10th National Parliamentary Election in 2014. He was subsequently re-elected from the same constituency in the 11th and 12th parliamentary elections.
