Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said the court will decide, after trial, whether the Awami League will be banned as a political party.
He came up with the decision at the Secretariat in response to a question from journalists on Tuesday.
The adviser said, “Since their activities are banned, if they now try to take to the streets with any programme, they will be considered as acting illegally. It is natural that the government will take action there.”
Other political parties may be symbolically present in the field, while the Awami League claims it will do many things, Zahed added.
He also said that deployment of the army does not mean the party will do a lot. “I do not think they have the moral courage to do much.”
“If everyone in the country suffers from dementia, then perhaps the Awami League will be able to speak loudly. Before that, I don’t think it will happen. Mafia, thieves, fraudsters, looters do not usually have much moral courage,” he said.
He further said, “The government does not believe the Awami League can do much. At best, they may have the capacity for minor acts of sabotage.”
Troops have been deployed in some districts where risks were considered higher, in the interest of public safety, he added.
