Australia began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Turkey in Vancouver on Saturday.
The Socceroos struck first in the 27th minute through Nestory Irankunda. The forward finished a quick attacking move and gave Australia the lead at BC Place.
Turkey enjoyed more possession for much of the game and tried to control the tempo. Arda Guler and Hakan Calhanoglu led several attacks from midfield, but Australia stayed organised and defended well.
Turkey increased the pressure in the second half as they searched for an equaliser. However, the Australian defence stood firm and continued to frustrate their opponents.
Australia put the result beyond doubt in the 75th minute. Connor Metcalfe fired a left footed shot towards the near post and beat goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. It was only the second international goal of his career.
Irankunda and Mohamed Toure caused problems whenever Australia moved forward. Cameron Burgess and Harry Souttar also delivered strong performances at the back as the Socceroos kept a clean sheet.
The victory gives Australia an excellent start in Group D and three valuable points. Their next test comes against the United States, while Turkey will look to recover in their upcoming match.
