A judge’s school-going son was stabbed to death and his wife seriously injured when an assailant stormed into their rented apartment in Rajshahi on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 2:30pm at the fifth-floor residence of Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman, located in the city’s Dabtola area.
Police confirmed that Tawsif Rahman Sumon was killed in the attack, while his mother Tasmin Nahar sustained serious injuries. She has been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where she underwent surgery.
Hospital spokesperson Shankar Kumar Biswas confirmed the treatment details to the media.
The building’s security guard, Meser Ali, said the attacker signed in as “Limon” in the visitors’ register, identifying himself as “the judge’s brother” before proceeding to the fifth-floor flat.
Around 30 minutes after the suspect entered the apartment, the family’s domestic help alerted neighbours to the attack. Residents from other flats rushed to the scene and found all three individuals injured.
Police have arrested the alleged attacker, identified as Emon from Gaibandha. The suspect is also receiving treatment at RMCH for injuries sustained during the incident.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian visited the crime scene around 5pm and later briefed journalists at the hospital. He revealed that a driving licence had been recovered from the suspect’s possession.
The victim, Tawsif Rahman, was a ninth-grade student. The family, originally from Jamalpur district, had been residing in the rented Dabtola apartment.
The commissioner also disclosed that Tasmin Nahar had previously filed a general diary (GD) against the suspect at Sylhet’s Jalalabad Police Station, though the exact motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
TIMES of Bangladesh has obtained a copy of the GD. According to the document, Tasmin reported receiving multiple death threats from Limon.
‘Prior dispute may be involved’
While briefing journalists, Commissioner Sufian said there might have been a prior dispute involved. He further confirmed that the suspect was injured and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
“The full details of the incident will be known after his interrogation is complete. Legal action will be taken in this regard,” he said.
A visit to the hospital revealed that the body of the deceased, Sumon, has been kept in the morgue. Both the alleged attacker and the judge’s wife are being treated at RMCH.
Later in the evening, Gaziur Rahman, deputy commissioner of police (Media) for Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, provided additional details to journalists.
He stated that preliminary information suggests the attacker, Emon, had been previously acquainted with the judge’s wife.
An argument reportedly took place between them over an unspecified matter, which escalated into the violent attack. Gaziur explained that in an effort to defend themselves, they fought back.
During the struggle, the judge’s son sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to his wounds. Both the judge’s wife and the attacker were injured and are currently unconscious.
“We will know more once they regain consciousness,” he added. Police have collected various pieces of evidence from the scene for analysis. CCTV footage is also available.
“Analysing this evidence will provide a complete picture of the incident. The attacker is reportedly from Gaibandha,” the deputy commissioner said.
