Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, spokesperson for National Citizens Party (NCP), has clarified his position regarding allegations filed against him with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
He stated that, to his knowledge, no formal case has been initiated; rather, only some complaints have been submitted.
Speaking to reporters after an NCP Iftar mahfil in the capital’s Shyampur on Friday evening, the former Youth and Sports adviser addressed recent developments. On Thursday afternoon, a group of Shakib Al Hasan’s fans gathered at the ACC office to submit a complaint against him.
“As far as I know, it is not a case; some complaints have gone to the ACC,” Asif said. “I saw in the media today that fans of a certain cricket player went there, created a mob, and filed a complaint.”
Asif explained that during the July mass uprising, Shakib Al Hasan had endorsed Sheikh Hasina and taken a position against the movement.
Consequently, Asif believed the cricketer lost the moral right to wear the Bangladesh jersey. “Now, if that is corruption – if not allowing someone to play is corruption – then let me be punished for it. I have no problem with that,” he remarked.
Describing the incident as “ridiculous,” Asif noted that the fans alleged corruption amounting to Tk1,000 crore simply because the cricketer was not allowed to play.
He expressed regret that while a media trial persisted throughout the previous day, many reports failed to mention the specific reasons for the complaint or the identities of those filing it.
While acknowledging that anyone has the right to file a complaint with the ACC, Asif Mahmud suggested there might be “provocation or instigation” behind the organised gathering of people at the commission’s office.
He added that he is ready to cooperate and clarify his position if any specific allegations are raised.
Regarding the political front, Asif Mahmud noted that the official work for the NCP’s six elected Members of Parliament (MPs) has not yet commenced. Their voices will be heard starting from the first parliamentary session.
He expressed hope that these six representatives would bring new momentum to parliament and reflect the will of the people.
Asif Mahmud concluded by seeking public support and prayers, stating that the NCP remains committed to the spirit of the July mass uprising and will continue to work on behalf of the people.
