Unknown miscreants have reportedly set fire to a temporary election office of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Noor Ahmed Anwari in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. Anwari is contesting the upcoming election with the ‘Dharipalla’ (scales) symbol.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at the Nazirpara football field area in Ward 8 of Teknaf Sadar Union, sparking tension in the locality.
Md Alam, the Jamaat leader in charge of the office, stated that activists had left the premises around 11 pm on Tuesday after a meeting. The fire was discovered at dawn, and the administration was promptly informed.
Upon receiving the news, members of the Navy, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and police visited the site. Officials present included Major Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, Medical Officer of Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB), and Md Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station.
Teknaf Upazila Executive Magistrate Rakibul Hasan Chowdhury also inspected the location. He confirmed that legal action would be taken to identify and apprehend those responsible once a written complaint is submitted.
Abdu Rahim Nuri, President of Cox’s Bazar District Chhatra Shibir, described the area as “highly risky” due to the presence of local terrorists and urged the administration to increase surveillance in the region.
In response to the arson attack, the administration has heightened security measures to maintain law and order in the area.
