Arsenal defender William Saliba will spend an extended period on the sidelines after suffering a back injury during the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The Premier League club confirmed the news on Wednesday.
Saliba struggled with the injury throughout the tournament in the United States. It limited his training sessions during France’s campaign.
The defender was forced off after just 30 minutes in France’s semifinal defeat to Spain. He also missed the third place match, where France lost to England.
After returning to London, Saliba underwent further medical checks.
Arsenal said specialist examinations confirmed a back injury that will require rehabilitation.
“Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation,” the club said.
“Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme.”
The club also said everyone is working to help Saliba return as soon as possible.
“Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
Arsenal will begin the defence of their Premier League title with a home match against promoted Coventry City on August 21.
It is still unclear whether Saliba will be fit for the start of the new season.
