The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-15) has discovered a significant stockpile of firearms and military equipment during an operation at the Balukhali Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
The seizure, which took place in the early hours of 29 March, has intensified concerns regarding potential sabotage and the presence of organised armed groups within the camp boundaries.
Acting on a tip-off received at approximately 1am last Sunday, a team from the RAB-15 CPC-1 Teknaf Camp identified a cache hidden in the Block-B 41 area of Balukhali Camp-8 East.
The tactical team launched the raid at 2:30am, surrounding a semi-permanent tin-shed residence belonging to a suspect identified as 40-year-old Saikat Hossain Bulu. However, the suspect managed to flee the premises and currently remains at large.
Discovery of weaponry and gear
A meticulous search of the property led to the discovery of a variety of weapons and specialised military equipment concealed within a custom-built ceiling loft in the bedroom.
The items, which were found wrapped in cloth, included a locally manufactured one-shooter gun, a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, and several rounds of ammunition for both rifles and pistols.
Alongside the weaponry, the force recovered a substantial volume of military-style attire, including 85 pairs of combat uniforms, 210 combat caps, 30 helmets, 15 bandoliers, 40 pairs of gloves, and 98 pairs of specialised socks.
Authorities believe these materials indicate that an organised armed group was preparing for planned activities.
Ongoing investigation, security concerns
AM Faruk, the assistant director (law and media) of RAB-15, said the operation successfully disrupted a major plan for sabotage and that the battalion maintains high vigilance against terrorist activities in the region.
He confirmed that a combing operation is currently underway to apprehend Saikat Hossain Bulu, and noted that the seized arsenal has been handed over to the relevant police station as legal proceedings continue.
Security experts have noted that such discoveries highlight the critical need for enhanced surveillance and coordinated efforts to dismantle criminal syndicates and armed factions operating within the camps to maintain law and order.
