People joined the 13th parliamentary election with enthusiasm like the Eid festival, Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said on Friday.

He said, “All ominous signs and fears have been washed away in the floodwaters. As a nation, we have ultimately emerged victorious.”

Sanaullah said this while concluding his speech during the formal announcement of results at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon around 11am on Friday.

He said, “Our effort was one hundred percent. We believe that as a nation our honour and image have been further strengthened in the global arena.”

“May Bangladesh’s democracy never again deviate from its designated track. I hope this election will serve as a path and example for organising even better elections in the future,” he added.

He also said, “We once again apologise for our mistakes and hereby formally declare the conclusion.” The remaining statistical matters will be provided separately to the media by the senior secretary, he added.

On Thursday (12 February), voting began at 7:30am and ended at 4:30pm. According to the announced results, BNP won two-thirds of the constituencies.
