Mohammedan Sporting Club have parted ways with head coach Alfaz Ahmed following a sustained dip in form in the Bangladesh Football League, the club confirmed in an official statement on Sunday.

Assistant coach Abdul Kayum Sentu has been placed in interim charge for the remainder of the season, while long-time club member Amirul Islam Babu will take on the role of team leader.

In their statement, Mohammedan said the decision was taken after “careful consideration” of the team’s recent performances, with the board aiming to restore consistency and progress in the closing stages of the campaign.

Mohammedan currently sit seventh in the 10-team table with 11 points from 12 matches, only two points above the relegation zone. Their struggles are reflected in an eight match winless run across all competitions.

Their Federation Cup campaign has also faltered. With five points from three matches, they lie fourth in Group B and must win their final fixture to have any chance of reaching the play-offs.

Alfaz, appointed in 2023, had overseen a remarkable turnaround at the club. He guided Mohammedan to their first league title in 23 years last season, ending a long wait for silverware.

He also led the team to Federation Cup success in 2023, defeating arch-rivals Abahani in the final.

However, a sharp decline in results this season ultimately led to his dismissal, as the club looks to salvage what remains of the campaign.
