Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Sarwar on Sunday said there is no security threat surrounding this year’s Pohela Baishakh celebrations in the capital.
He made the remarks during a briefing at Ramna Park in the afternoon, where he also outlined extensive security arrangements for the Bengali New Year festivities.
The DMP commissioner said security has been tightened in and around Ramna Park to ensure a peaceful celebration.
He added that law enforcement agencies remain fully prepared to handle any untoward situation.
In addition to uniformed police deployment, plainclothes officers and intelligence teams will remain active throughout the event. Surveillance will also be conducted using CCTV cameras, still photography, and drones.
Special measures have been taken to prevent eve-teasing, mugging, and cyber-related offences during the celebrations, he said.
The commissioner further stated that masks, sharp objects, flying lanterns, and fireworks will be strictly prohibited at all event venues.
Entry to Ramna Park will begin at 5am and continue until 5pm. He also confirmed strict security arrangements for the traditional Pohela Baishakh procession starting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
