The government will not create any obstacles if leaders and activists of the banned Awami League wish to participate in the upcoming local government elections, Prime Minister’s Information Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference on the government’s regular activities held at the Secretariat.
When asked whether pending cases against many Awami League leaders and activists would be an issue, the adviser said participation in elections is possible even with pending cases.
“The government will not obstruct them,” Zahed Ur Rahman stated.
Regarding concerns that many Awami League leaders and activists hold official positions and titles, the adviser said such matters are not significant since the party’s activities remain banned.
Responding to a query about why the India’s Border Security Force (BSF) is carrying out push-in operations along the Bangladesh-India border, the adviser said he does not believe the Indian government is conducting push-ins to pressure Bangladesh, attributing such incidents to elections in West Bengal.
