Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested 12 individuals and seized 37,500kg of cement that was being illegally smuggled to Myanmar.
Acting on a tip-off, a special anti-smuggling operation was conducted by the Coast Guard Ship and Station Saint Martin’s in the deep sea area northwest of Saint Martin’s Island, under Teknaf Police Station in Cox’s Bazar, at 3:00am on Monday, said a press release.
During the operation, the Coast Guard signalled a suspicious boat to stop. The boat attempted to flee, but the operational team chased and intercepted it in the deep sea. A search of the boat led to the seizure of the cement, estimated to be worth around Tk3,75,000, along with the boat used for the smuggling.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the information at noon. He said legal procedures regarding the seized cement, the boat and the arrested individuals are currently underway.
