Nahid Islam, convener of National Citizen Party (NCP) and opposition chief whip, stated on Saturday that the Awami League cannot be rehabilitated under the pretext of Liberation War, 7 March, or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Speaking as the chief guest at an Iftar and Doa Mahfil held at the Ambika Memorial Hall in Faridpur, he added that the Awami League has tarnished the Liberation War – a glorious chapter of Bangladesh.
He further alleged that the party had used the name of the war to legitimise various crimes, including enforced disappearances, murders, killings, and money laundering.
Nahid accused the government of being the first to betray the “July aspirations.” He noted that while two oaths were taken following the July Charter implementation order, the ruling party had already betrayed the aspirations and the charter through one of those oaths.
Expressing an interest in working positively with the government, the NCP leader placed a demand for the Reform Council to be sworn in before the session scheduled for the 12th. He also called for the removal of the “fascist President” during the first session.
Nahid warned that if these demands are not met, an 11-party alliance would be forced to take to the streets.
The event was also attended by Sarjis Alam, Chief Organiser of NCP’s northern region, as a special guest.
Other prominent attendees included Nizam Uddin, joint member secretary and Faridpur divisional organising secretary; Advocate Tarikul Islam, convener of Jatiyo Jubo Shakti; and Zahid Ahsan, convener of Jatiyo Chhatro Shakti, alongside other central and divisional leaders of NCP.
