Ajax have strengthened their squad by signing goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on a season-long loan from Barcelona, continuing an active summer transfer window ahead of the new campaign.
The Dutch club confirmed the agreement on Tuesday, with the 34-year-old joining on loan for the 2026-27 season.
“Ajax has reached an agreement with Barcelona and Marc ter Stegen,” the Eredivisie club said in a statement.
Ter Stegen becomes Ajax’s latest high-profile arrival after former Germany international Julian Brandt signed a three-year contract last week following the expiry of his previous deal.
Ajax have also added Nigeria striker Tolu Arokodare on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and completed the signing of Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo from Al Hilal for just under €20 million. The 23-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with the Amsterdam club.
Ter Stegen joined Barcelona in 2014 and enjoyed a trophy-filled spell at Camp Nou, winning the UEFA Champions League and seven La Liga titles. However, injuries disrupted the last two seasons of his career.
After Joan Garcia established himself as Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ter Stegen joined Girona on loan in January. His spell ended prematurely when he suffered a hamstring injury during his second appearance in February, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.
The Germany international also missed selection for his country’s FIFA World Cup squad following his lengthy absence.
Despite his move to Ajax, Ter Stegen remains under contract with Barcelona until June 2028. The loan gives the experienced goalkeeper an opportunity to regain regular playing time as Ajax continue rebuilding their squad with experienced internationals and emerging talent.
