The road from the Uttara North Metro Rail Station to the Mirpur Cantonment DOHS MP Checkpost has been officially named after renowned thinker and writer Ahmed Sofa, with the new name “Ahmed Sofa Sarani.”
The name plaque was unveiled on Sunday afternoon near the Uttara South Metro Rail Station under the initiative of Dhaka North City Corporation.
The programme was attended by academic Salimullah Khan as the chief guest, while the event was presided over by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Azaz.
Speaking at the event, Salimullah Khan said the day was a special one for him, recalling that Ahmed Sofa published the first book of the Liberation War, Jagrat Bangladesh, on 28 July, 1971, and noting that after his death he was not permitted burial at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Memorial.
He said the naming of the road was a declaration to the nation that Ahmed Sofa continues to live on through his ideas and contributions.
In his remarks, Mohammad Ejaz said the city corporation was working to establish narrative-based governance in the post-July period, stressing that urban development should go beyond infrastructure to include the stories and memories that shape future generations.
He added that naming roads and structures after distinguished individuals was a way of honouring those who made outstanding contributions to the country and of linking urban development with the city’s history, culture, and intellectual heritage.
